The 8th International Conference on Law, Technology, Spirituality and Society (ICOLESS)Vol 5 (2025)
In recent decades, rapid technological progress, evolving legal systems, and the growing influence of spirituality have significantly shaped global society. Innovations such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and digitalization have revolutionized sectors like healthcare, education, and industry. However, they also pose ethical dilemmas, widen inequalities, and create new dependencies. Similarly, globalization has enhanced the exchange of ideas and resources but has also intensified global inequality and complicated governance.
Modern legal frameworks play a critical role in managing the balance between innovation and societal well-being. They are increasingly tasked with addressing cross-border issues such as climate change, data privacy, and human rights. As a guiding principle, sustainable development requires integrating environmental, social, and economic goals to ensure current progress does not compromise future generations. Yet achieving sustainability is challenging due to political, economic, and social constraints.
Law is essential in promoting sustainability by regulating environmental protection, guiding technological use, and ensuring social justice. Legal systems must adapt to current challenges by ensuring that emerging technologies are used ethically and equitably. At the same time, spirituality contributes to shaping legal and ethical norms. Spiritual teachings emphasize justice, stewardship, and responsibility, offering valuable perspectives in addressing issues such as inequality, poverty, and environmental degradation.
In this context, the International Conference on Law, Technology, Spirituality, and Society (ICOLESS) 2025, themed “Sustainable Development and Modern Law: Challenges and Opportunities in the Globalized World,” aims to explore these intersections. It will bring together scholars, legal practitioners, and policymakers to discuss how law can foster inclusive and sustainable development while responding to technological and spiritual dynamics.
Hosted by the Faculty of Sharia, Universitas Islam Negeri Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang, Indonesia, ICOLESS 2025 will be held on May 7–8, 2025, offering a collaborative platform to generate practical, actionable solutions for a more just and sustainable global society.
