Abstract

The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed educational ecosystems by reshaping learning environments, communication patterns, and civic engagement in digital spaces. While AI offers unprecedented opportunities for personalized learning, collaborative knowledge construction, and inclusive education, it simultaneously raises critical concerns regarding digital inequality, algorithmic bias, misinformation, data privacy, and ethical responsibility. These challenges necessitate a critical re-examination of digital citizenship education through the lens of social justice, particularly within Islamic educational contexts where moral values, justice (al-'adl), responsibility (amanah), and human dignity (karāmah al-insān) constitute the philosophical foundation of learning.

This conceptual paper critically analyzes the intersection between digital citizenship, social justice education, and AI by synthesizing contemporary literature from accredited Indonesian journals (SINTA 2) and international studies on AI in education. The analysis argues that current digital citizenship frameworks remain predominantly technology-oriented and insufficiently integrate ethical, spiritual, and justice-based dimensions that are essential for preparing responsible digital citizens. Islamic education offers a transformative framework that emphasizes ethical AI literacy, critical digital reasoning, inclusive participation, compassion, and accountability as integral components of digital citizenship.

The paper proposes an integrative educational model that combines AI literacy, digital ethics, Islamic moral education, and social justice pedagogy to foster learners who are not only technologically competent but also socially responsible and ethically conscious. Such a framework contributes to strengthening educational resilience against digital disinformation, algorithmic discrimination, and unequal access to digital opportunities. Consequently, Islamic education possesses significant potential to redefine digital citizenship education by harmonizing technological innovation with universal ethical values, thereby promoting equitable, inclusive, and sustainable education in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
